Education and outreach is at the heart of what we do. The future of amateur radio depends on the next generation getting introduced to these principles, and ARRL is committed to reaching and inspiring the next generation of amateur radio—our youth.

The impact of gifts to the ARRL Education and Technology Program received national attention early this year when Harry Smith of the NBC TODAY show interviewed ARRL Teachers’ Institute on Wireless Technology graduate Drew Mortensen, AC3DS, and his students in the Harbor Creek High School Advanced Technologies Club.

Inspired by their teacher, who was inspired about amateur radio through the ARRL program, these students worked to earn their licenses, setup their own amateur radio station, and made contact with the International Space Station while it passed overhead. Watch their reactions on the ARRL HQ YouTube channel.

The ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology is a donor-funded professional development program designed to help classroom teachers elevate their STEM programs through wireless technology. As a part of the ARRL Education and Technology Program, several sessions are conducted each year, and the program continues to grow. Teachers Institute is filled with lectures, hands-on activities, and demonstrations to inspire teachers so they can inspire their students’ using tools to introduce basic electronics, radio science, satellite communications, amateur radio, weather science, microcontrollers, and electronic sensors to their students. Teachers are provided with the equipment needed to take wireless technology to their classrooms.
